Eastern Nagari"

Recently one article was repeatedly published twice in an  Assamese Daliy 'Asomiya Pratidin'( অসমীয়া প্ৰতিদিন, ১০ এপ্ৰিল, পৃষ্ঠা ৭ and ১৭ এপ্ৰিল, পৃষ্ঠা ৫) . It is regarding the prevalling controversies  towards "Naming  Assamese Script as Eastern Nagari Script" . I am attaching the image version of the article with this mail. We have started a discussion in Facebook group Many people have given valuable comments on this topic. You can view the facebook thread here

I am  quoting few selected comments here. I hope all of you will give your learned comments and Scientifically supported information in this regard.

Wahid Saleh :

Dear Pankaj, There I go again. Again I am writing a mail in English in reply to your mail.  Mr. Sharma makes interesting reading.  Would it possible to refer to some publication to support the origin of the Assamese language?

Manjit Nath:

Bikram M. Baruah :

Biraj Kumar Kakati :

Dear Sushantada :I do believe that the history/origin of language has much more to do with the development of the script, even though both of them are different entities. See the concepts behind the debate of devnagari, eastern-nagari, bengali, and assamese scripts.

Sushanta   Kar :
Dear Biraj,
You have missed my points. I didn't denied the relation altogether. But, since the scripts were used by the literates only they have diffent history to tell. That's why we find names like Brahmi, Kutil, Nagari all these. anyway, with this mail I'm forwarding a briefings by Dr Upendra Nath Goswami Find the attachment.

দুইমতকে একত্ৰিত কৰি ° মহেন্দ্ৰ বৰাই কৈছে - "Assamese script is a direct descendant of the Brahmi, branching itself off from the so called Gupta alphabet or the Northern Indian Script, which progressed on its way by acquiring for itself certain basic traits of the Kutila Style of writing in course of its journey through the long corridors of history"

1. IIT Guwahati has never referred to the script used by the Assamese language as Eastern Nagari. For that matter, the article in "Pratidin" also does not attribute this to IIT Guwahati.
2. We were part of a group of projects sponsored by the Dept of IT Govt of India on language technology. As part of this project, IITG provided inputs on Assamese and on Unicode for Assamese. The document "AssameseCodeChartOct02.pdf" is what has been printed by DIT based on part of the inputs given by IITG. Note the comparison to Bengali at various places.
3. DIT proposed a Unicode chart to handle Bengali, Assamese and Manipuri languages, calling it the "Bengali Script". In this. they missed out on inserting the letter "khya" in the main chart, although it is mentioned in the explanations. Some of the proposals were accepted by the Unicode Inc. but the Assamese specific changes (re-placement of "ra" and "oabbo") were not accepted. The Unicode table for "Bengali" currently is at U0980.pdf. In this, alphabetical ordering of words in Assamese will be incorrectly done as "ra" and "oabbo" are not in their "correct" places.
4. Subsequently, IITG sent a modified table to DIT with the inclusion of "khya" also. See "assamese_proposed.pdf". No action has been taken on this to the best of our knowledge. IITG had also sent a letter to DIT suggesting the renaming of the "Bengali script" to "BAM script" (Bengali-Assamese-Manipuri). But no action has been taken on this too.
5. Our view is that we should all work together to get Unicode Inc to a) accept the changes for Assamese in the 0980-09ff unicode table, b) accept the renaming of the script to "BAM" or even to Eastern Nagari, and to make changes to all references to Bengali, appropriately.
6. In our view, there is no point in fighting for a separate Assamese Table as there are so few differences between the Assamese and Bengali scripts. It is unlikely to be accepted, and there is no technical justification in doing so either. We do not wish to go into which script came first and which developed from where. That is not a subject for computational linguists.
7. Even before Unicode Inc accepts our proposals, we should propagate the use of code 09B1 for "ra" and code 09B5 for "oabba" and 09BB for "khya" in all Assamese software and documents. These codes are not being used for any other purpose, so there is no technical difficulty of using them and there is not likely to be any objections either as there will be no conflicts with other languages.

Dear All,

Manjit has forwarded the following article published in Sadin and posted on the net by Anjal.
On 27th April Dr. Gautam Baruh sent a mail under the title “Eastern Nagari Vs Assamese Script” and gave information about their activities and actions taken by them.  In his mail he suggested among others the following:

Quote:

These codes are not being used for any other purpose, so there is no technical difficulty of using them and there is not likely to be any objections either as there will be no conflicts with other languages..

We have a few alternatives open before us:
1.      Follow the suggestion made by Dr. Baruah and support him
2.      Contact GU/TU/AMTRON etc. and find out what their opinion is and request their suggestions regarding the way ahead
3.      Find a way to get Assamese as a separate language registered with UNICODE organisation.
4.      May be you have other options than the above. In that case please suggest.

I shall be much obliged to get your valued suggestions. After which I shall revert to take action.

Greetings,
Wahid da

@সত্যকাম,

"Scientifically, I would endorse Bhagat da's point. Scientifically we are not a part of the "Eastern Nagari" branch of scripts because our "OWN" Script is not the current Script, but our "OWN" scripts are the Garhgaya/Kaithali/Bamuniya Scripts, as "Eastern Nagari" developed through Gupta->Kutil->Nagari->"Eastern Nagari" and our "OWN" script never took that route."

কিন্তু স্বৰ্গীয় মহেশ্বৰ নেওগদেৱে তেওঁৰ "Early history of the Vaiṣṇava faith and movement in Assam: Śaṅkaradeva and his times"ৰ ৩০৮ নং পৃষ্ঠাত তলত দিয়া ধৰণে লিখিছিলে ।

Wahed da,
In my opinion, Dr. Gautam Barua's suggestions are most technically sound and
feasible while free from any irrational (Assamese-Bengali) sentiments. I
strongly believe we should support his (or IIT-Guwahati)'s position. It will
bolster the cause.

Regarding the other alternatives, let me give me my opinions.
2. Contact GU/TU/AMTRON etc. ...
Worth talking to them and better align them to the same thinking as Dr. Barua
and get more support for the cause.

3. Find a way to get Assamese as a separate language registered with UNICODE
organisation ...

This is a wrong statement my itself as UNICODE does not deal with any
"language", rather it deals with "writing systems" or "scripts" irrespective of
any language. May be you intended to say "Find a way to get Assamese script as a
separate sub-range in UNICODE". I believe it is not technically suitable. The
reason is except 3 to 4 characters, Assamese and Bengali have the same
alphabets. Having different codes for the identical characters like অ, আ, ক, খ,
etc one for using in Assamese and another for Bengali makes no sense and will
create lots confusion specially among the code developer community.

Thanks,

We do have same right as does the Bengalis or Manipuris over this writing system ... in this situation, how come they named it as "Bengali Script" ????? This is exactly the reason we are looking for a "language independent" name.

I would try to address a few points here mentioned in the mail below. Forgive me for writing in English as writing in Assamese requires a lot of time and I am quite impoverished with regards to time.

Assamese fonts has their own individuality way back in the 3rd and 4th century, just like our language. Hueng-Tsang has written that the language spoken in Assam/Kamarupa was different than in the rest of India. Stone engravements found in Nogajori Khonikor gaon in the 5th-6th century lays the foundation of the viewpoint that Assamese script was unique since that time and it had a different chronological development since then, and not through Kutil and Gupta scripts. Assamese scripts during the medieval period (the period in which Ahom Buronjis and Charit Puthis were written) were of 3 forms - Kayastha/Lahkari Script (used by the kayasthas for writing the Charit Puthis), Ahom/Garhgaya Script (used in writing Buronjis) and Bamunia Scripts (used by the Brahmins for religious purposes). All these 3 forms were not very different from each other. But then after Sankardeva/Madhavadeva/Bhatta deva/Madhav Kandali/Ananta Kandali there was a void in the literary scene towards the end of the Ahom rule, mainly because of the Maans. When the British came to Assam there was a literary void. In 1813 the first Assamese Bible was published.

The Bengali fonts for printing were first made by a person called Panchanan Karmakar. When the British gave the job of designing the fonts to him, he was instructed to make fonts which can be used across a wider geography. Panchanan Karmakar initially traveled in some parts of Assam and East Bengal and finally in Srirampore he designed a common font for both Bengali and Assamese. However before any Assamese book was printed Panchanan Karmakar died. Then the British appointed another person called Atmaram Sharma, an Assamese from Kaliabor, who helped in translation of the Bible from Bengali to Assamese. Atmaram was the person who okayed the use of the already developed fonts designed by Panchanan Karmakar in the Assamese Bible and since then we use the same fonts for Assamese and Bengali, even though our own Script though started from Brahmi did not go through Kutil and Gupta Scripts and developed in parallel finally to Garhgaya/Kaithali/Bamuniya Scripts. These Scripts are slightly different from our currently used "Eastern Nagari" Script.

Scientifically, I would endorse Bhagat da's point. Scientifically we are not a part of the "Eastern Nagari" branch of scripts because our "OWN" Script is not the current Script, but our "OWN" scripts are the Garhgaya/Kaithali/Bamuniya Scripts, as "Eastern Nagari" developed through Gupta->Kutil->Nagari->"Eastern Nagari" and our "OWN" script never took that route.

But we have to practical. We cannot now turn the tide of time to get back out scripts from history and get them acknowledged. I have written the above facts because I wanted everyone of us to know the genesis of our scripts. These are facts and should be taught to the children which will make them proud. There are many things in our literary past which we should be proud of. The most important among them is our 'prose' history. Historically 'poetry' has been the literary medium to write literature - Mahakavyas to the Iliads
and Odysseys. 'Prose' medium of literature started parallelly in a few places in Europe and Assam - 'Ongkiya naats of Sankardeva and then 'Katha-Geeta', 'Katha-Bhagawat' by Bhattadev. We should be proud of this.

Lastly here are a few links about Atmaram Sharma and Panchanan Karmakar -

It would be nice to see someone here write the above things in a lucid and descriptive way to get it published in newspapers.

Thanks,
Satyakam

Anjal,
Already we have discussed a lot on this topic. I really do not understand why people are still running after the term Eastern Nagari. We already clear our stand that we do not have any objection in accepting any name such as BAM (suggested by IIT Guwahati) or AMBM (as suggest in today's newspaper), Eastern Nagari or any other term. But we believe that it is not possible to get Assamese script as a separate unicode table where there is a difference/addition of only three letters with the existing Bengali script(?). We are just opting for the easily attainable route, as per our believe. Even we will be more happy if somehow we can get Assamese script as different. But that is not feasible so easily. Moreover, do not forget that English, Assamese, Bengali, etc. are the names of different languages and not scripts. At last, I would like to request all the Unicode Savvy people not to fight among ourselves. Otherwise we may not succeed in changing/correcting the mistakes in the
existing
unicode table.

Raiz,
I believe there is no 'fight' or 'ugly thing'. Even constructive discussions will contain a bit of argument. If all of us are clear about the destination then confusion on the resting points is common in a long route.
My thoughts- when Xahitya Xobha is thinking to go till the level of PM, we can try for Assamese or Kamrupi. Fall back options will be Eastern Nagari, BAM or other suggestions.

If we are all clear on my above line, I believe even if we exchange 100 emails in this thread, we are advocating the same thing.

Raiz,

"Eastern Nagari" is never an option. We will forsake our own script history if we do that.

Biraj da says - "We are opting the easily attainable route". And many people have agreed. But "easily attainable"? At the cost of what? Our own script's rich heritage. Atmaram Sharma did a mistake in 1813 using the same letters for the first Assamese bible, the letters made by Panchanan Karmakar for Bengali Press (He also designed letters of languages like Arabic, Marathi, Devanagari etc). Atmaram Sharma might not have any options then. But the mailing list enclosed here has enough 'Jatoyotabadi' people to fight for the cause of our script's heritage. Should we submit without putting up a decent fight? Following on "the easily attainable route"?

I dont know what is ugly here. We should be proud of our script's history and should fight it out to put it up in a place where it belongs.

Satyakam

Satyakam,
You are talking about a different sets of script, NOT the script set currently used to write Assamese/Bengali/Manipuri.
I do agree with you about reviving the old script, which is our heritage. However, our current debate is about naming/renaming the script set CURRENTLY used to write our languages. I hope I understood you correctly. If not, please let me know.
Best,
Bikram

Yes Bikram da,

I am speaking about renaming the Script here. It should not be "Eastern Nagari" is what I feel after going through a lot of books, talking to several people of literary repute.
We should debate about it and come to an agreed conclusion. However, the idea I have is all of us, everyone included in the mail thread here has no objection in removing the concept of "Eastern Nagari", and delinking it from the 'Internet' and 'Wikipedia' accepted belief of its association with the Assamese Script.

The first step is to edit the Wikipedia page and let both the viewpoints be know to the audience.
1. Development of Assamese script through Brahmi -> Gupta -> Kutil -> Nagari -> Eastern Nagari (?)
2. Development of Assamese script through Brahmi -> Gupta (maybe) -> Kamrupi -> Kaithali/Bamunia/Garhgaya

Then we may also say in that article that the viewpoint is debated. I can never accept the view that Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhav Kandali wrote in "Eastern Nagari" as mentioned in the Wikipedia page. Maybe, today the script we use is "Eastern Nagari" as we are using a borrowed script (1813/1833 bible) from West Bengal. Maybe, if it can be proved that West Bengal borrowed our Ancient Kamarupi Script way back during the times of the Barmanas, Salasthambhas and Palas, then the entire concept of "Eastern Nagari" will become a myth and misnomer. But the "Eastern Nagari" angle can never be justified for the Ancient Kamarupa Script. If we accept "Eastern Nagari" we will reconcile to the fact that we are using a borrowed script from West Bengal which might have taken the Brahmi -> Gupta -> Kutil -> Nagari -> Eastern Nagari route.

Kutil script started during the 8th century, while our script started in the 5th/6th century. There are more than 15 evidences before the 'Kanai Boroxi Buwa' stone engraving found in North Guwahati, where the gradual progress of the formation of Ancient Assamese script can be shown to take place. Therefore, it can be asserted that our script never took the Kutil script route.

The second step, after the information from the Wikipedia page propagates through the Internet and reaches the shores of Academic Institutes like IIT etc and Organisations like AXX etc, public debate should be there to bring up a common viewpoint, taking everyone into confidence.

I hope I am more clear now.

Regards,
Satyakam

Dear all,
OK, I have taken back the word "fight" and let us consider it as a debate. Satyakam, I do understand that you have not understand the objective of my previous mail. I am going to tell everything in the context of unicode. I am not denying that the Kamrupi script was started in the 5th or 6th century. Moreover, easily attainable route through Eastern Nagari, BAM, AMBM, etc. does not mean at the cost of our "own script's rich heritage" (not only eastern nagari as you have mentioned in your previous mail). Neither it means that we are neglecting the old Kamrupi (Assamese) script.

I do understand that we are not having a clear picture of Unicode. Actually, what does unicode mean?

Unicode provides a unique number for every character,
        no matter what the platform,
        no matter what the program,
        no matter what the language.

Therefore, is it really wise to claim that we need a separate script name (such as Assamese script) in the list of unicode table. Do not forget that in modern languages there is a similarity between the scripts of Assamese, Bengali and Manipuri.

The discussion was initiated by ....and two/three Assamese people also took part...."  ...."After prolonged discussion they coined the terms Eastern Neo-Brahmic scriptor Eastern Nagari Script"....

I am being curious to know few things -

1) Whether  the prolonged discussion thread is available  somewhere or not ? How was it documented ?

2) It would be also nice to know who are the two/three Assamese representative in that discussion ?

3) Were the  outcomes of the said discussion been made public through media at that time ?

4) Were the participants (on behalf of Assam and Assamese language) consulted Assamese literary, linguistic, academic scholars and institutions ?   Did the participants from Assam feel like taking advice/suggestion from expert scholars and or referring to  available scientific documents  ?  If not , then the issue could have been raised in media at that time.

If all other people in this thread knows the above points then I beg my pardon for ignorance. In such case I request someone to send me a personal mail for the above queries.

Thanks and regards,

Pankaj Barah

Pankaj,
All your queries were discussed in earlier mails, where you also took part. I have written everything in the context of Unicode only.

Please go through the following links for your queries. Hopefully you will understand.

I was one of the participants and the words I proposed in the discussion was "Eastern Neo-Brahmic" in place of "Bengali Script" (Bikram98 18:15, 27 February 2007)
The other Assamese I know in the discussion is "Chaipau Barua". SameerKhan is Bangladeshi-American.  Not sure of others.

Anything in Wikipedia is already public. I am not sure if there any need to make more public by any other means. Anyway, in 2007, it was an non-issue.... even if somebody send letters to editors, they must have ended up in the Editor's Trash.

I personally did not consulted any other person - I stated what I believe is right ---- there should be a common name, it can be "Eastern Neo-Brahmic".
After all, its Wikipedia !! You can always challenge its contents with more reference and scientific documents.... the contents are still open for discussion and modification based on additional prove/documents.

Dear Bikram Da,

Thanks for your point to point answer compare to Biraj's confusing answer ( 'HOPEFULLY' it was not the case that I did not understand him). :)
Just to note  your last point "After all, its Wikipedia !"-> well the point is true. But the matter (wrong information) is not only in wikipedia now. It has also been sent around to many places even to Axom Xahitya Xabha.

By the way I am not expert. It was just a layman's curiosity. Thanks for your (BMB's) reply.

Thanks !

Pankaj

A very timely writeup. Another eye-opener. Time to refresh certain beliefs.

Assamese script controversy and Unicode
Unicode is a computing industry standard for the consistent encoding, representation and handling of text expressed in most of the world’s writing systems. Its consortium founded in 1991, develops and maintains a wide spectrum of globalization standards and date repositories that are deployed as the foundation for internalization and localization of software on every platform around the world. In a multilingual office or business setting, Unicode’s importance as a universal character set cannot be overlooked. It represents a single encoding scheme for all languages and characters. No one can deny the importance and usefulness of this computing system.
Unfortunately, the Assamese writing system has been placed under Bengali in Unicode, thinking it a sub-language of Bengali. The Unicode also states that the Bengali script is used in writing Assamese and a number of minority languages. It reminds us of the years from 1836 to 1872, the darkest period in the history of Assamese language as the British rulers imposed Bengali in Assam. The justification of this imposition was that Assamese was considered to be a patois, colloquial dialect or upabhasa of Bengali. Hardly any Assamese voice was raised at that time. It seems providential that the American Baptist missionaries came to Assam to restore its language from extinction. The struggle to reinstate Assamese was spearheaded by Miles Bronson, and it was finally won in 1873. Thus, it took about 37 years to convince the British adminisitration that Assamese was a distinct language and independent of Bengali. We need a different struggle in this computer-internet age for allocation of a separate slot for Assamese script in Unicode. Therefore, this writing is neither indented to set Assamese over any other language nor to denigrate such one, but for a proper placing of Assamese.
The origin of the idea of Assamese script can be traced back to as early as 300 BC, found in stone inscriptions during the reign of Ashoka the Great. This is known as Brahmi script. In Assam, it developed through the ages and come to be know as Kamrupi. This is authenticated by inscriptions found on stones, copperplates, coins, temples and writings on the bark of sanchi tree. There are documentary evidences to show that Kamrupi script was written in the AD 7th century or even before. The ancient name of Assam was Kamrup, and for a considerable period its territory was extended to the River Kosi in Mithila area of Bihar, Orissa and Bengal. Moreover, it had cordial relations with the neighbouring kingdoms. The people of those areas came under socio-cultural influence of Kamrup. They used Kamrupi or borrowed the idea from this script. That is why there is a close affinity of Assamese with Bengali, Maithili and Oriya (phonetically). The alphabets of Assamese and Maithili versions are almost same and these scripts are phonetically complete. Currently, the indigenous people of Mithila use Devanagari script for most purposes but still retain the use of Kamrupi for religious purposes. There is also a move by some Maithili scholars to revive Mithilakshar, in order to retain the original script.
Whereas the form used by Bengali is phonetically lacking because it does not have any alphabet to represent the sound ‘wa’. For the sound ‘ra’, the script is same as Assamese, the only difference is putting a dot under the letter instead of middle diagonal. It is because the Bengali was using the same script as the Assamese till the coming of the British. Certain changes were made in Bengali script during the British rule. Moreover, the Bengali does not have single alphabet to represent the sound ‘khya’. Therefore, it can be concluded that Bengali also used the Kamrupi script. Even Suniti Kumar Chatterjee (1890-1977), a renowned Bengali linguist admitted that certain letters in Bengali were not noticeable until the 12th century. This implied that Assamese was developed earlier than Bengali script. Suniti also admitted that the Charyapadas, the Buddhist songs composed in 8th-12th century considered as early writings of Assamese, Bengali and Maithili were written in Kamrupi Prakrit. Therefore, the Charyapadas bear examples of ancient Assamese literature. Manipuri script is written using the Bengali alphabet set along with a few more characters. The earliest relics of Assamese can be found in paleographic records of the Kamarup Kingdom from the 5th century to the 12th century. It is also to be observed that Assamese script has more resemblance with Tibetan than Devanagari script which developed in the eight century. Kamrupi has nothing to do with Nagari form of writing except a common source of borrowing the concept from Brahmi. Moreover, Kamrupi is three hundred years older than Nagari script. Therefore, the move by a section of intellectuals for renaming the Assamese writing system as Eastern or Pub-nagari is not only irrelevant but also erroneous.
Therefore, we need to voice against injustice done to Assamese writing system in Unicode and fight for its rightful place. At the same time, the Indian Government must recognize that Assamese is a distinct language and it has a long history. The government being a voting member must play an important role in the Unicode Consortium in securing a proper place for Assamese. Some of us have already sent appeals to the Consortium based in California that Assamese should either be given a separate slot, or be renamed as Kamrupi, of AMBM for Assamese, Maithili, Bengali and Manipuri, basing on the chronological use of Kamrupi script in  the ancient times. Fourthly, other than Pub- Nagari, there may be a common name where each of these scripts finds its own and proper place.

Dear Satyakam:
Thanks for posting that enlightening article. The points raised are basically correct.
From my studies, I also find the following.
1) The proto Assamese-Bengali language were evolved in the North East (Kamrup) long before the invasion of Nageri alphabet from the Southwest in the 10th cenbury. Nageri alphabet has very little influence upon the development of the Assamese and or Bengali script. As such I agree that East-Nageri will be a wrong name for the present scripts either for Assamese or for the Bengali language.
3) The Assamese and the Bengali language were basically the same (spoken and written) till about the tenth/eleventh century.
4) The Bengali language had been using the Assamese pet-kota RO till the other day.
5) The Bengali language had the Assamese X sound till the other day. Even now this X sound is prevalent in some dialects of Bengali language.
6) Al Beruni who visited in 11th century wrote that the NE has Gauriyo script.BTW the Bengali language was mainly known as Gauriya language before the Muslim rule and the name Gauriya was prevalent in Bengal till 19th century. Ram Mohan Roy published his "A Grammar of Gauriya Language" in 1833
5) There are many other issues.
However the problem for the Assamese is that we hardly have any scholars who have yet written a solid book on the script and the language. Dr Bani Kanta Kakoty's scholarly book is however no good for such historical issues. After all he was studying under Dr Suniti Kr Chatterji and could not oppose his views.
So I agree with the author that we have a big struggle to fight. Basically we need to discuss how to bell the cat.
Issues are:
1) We need to write an in depth article presenting the facts from Assamese points of view.
2) We need to come up with a common name which will be acceptable for the Assamese and the Bengalis.
3) We need to get Oxom Xahityo Xobha and Bengali Sahitya Sabha and Bangladesh Sahitya Sobha get involved. (Not necessarily seeking their scholarship but seeking their agreement).
4) If the above does not work, we should try for independent room in Unicode.
5) In the meantime, we need to edit and correct the Wikipadia
6) We need to approach UNICODE with the proposal.
7) We need to get GOI and GOA involved.
etc etc
